RB Leipzig moved back within 2 points of Dortmund as they saw off mid-table Cologne 4-2 on Monday night.
Leipzig’s away form has not faulted them this season, and they had the 2nd best away form in the Bundesliga coming into the match. However, they found themselves fall behind to a Jhon Cordoba strike in the 7th minute.
Gulacsi saved from Rexhbecaj’s shot from a tight angle, it hit the post and came to Cordoba who fired it into the net. The Hungarian shot-stopper got a touch but couldn’t keep the Colombian’s effort out. Leipzig equalised 13 minutes later.
Angeliño crossed the ball in from the left and Schick got up to head it past Horn into the bottom-right corner and get his 9th goal of the season. It was bad news for Cologne moments later as Cordoba had to be substituted due to an injury, with Modeste coming on to replace him.
Leipzig had scored 5 goals in their last match on the road and could have easily won by more against Cologne. They got their second of the evening in the 38th minute.
Laimer played a lovely ball through to Nkunku, and he cheekily chipped it over the advancing Horn. 5 minutes after the break, Leipzig’s star striker put the visitors two in front.
Some lovely reaction play saw Gulacsi punt the ball long to the advancing Werner, who took it in and slotted it past the helpless Cologne keeper. Cologne were having none of it and retaliated shortly after.
The ex-Blackburn striker Modeste got the ball about 25 yards out and curled it past Gulacsi into the bottom corner. A goal Messi would have been proud of. Literally seconds later though, Olmo preserved Leipzig’s 2 goal lead.
The young Spaniard got the ball right at the edge of the box and slotted it past Horn. Despite Leipzig’s attacking prowess, it proved to be the last goal of the match. Werner had a shot saved from a tight angle, and Cologne were denied a penalty after the referee had initially blown for a foul on Modeste, only to revert the decision after consulting VAR.
In the last 15 minutes, Olmo, Werner and Sabitzer all missed very good opportunities, and Modeste could have made things interesting when he missed a sitter in the 87th minute. Leipzig would be closer to Bayern if their home form didn’t let them down, while Cologne will be keeping a watchful eye on the teams below them as they haven’t won since the restart.
